Clown School

When you want to learn how to do something, go to school...
...but clown school?

Clown Class 2010
Graduation Day for
Abby-Normal!

Yes, that's right, and there are opportunities all across the United States and world-wide.

What type of classes might you find at such a school? There are the obvious lessons, like make-up application, costumes ideas, and even finding your own clown character - but the opportunities are endless. Any school might add to the basics of make-up & costuming, classes such as juggling, balloon twisting, skits and using skit props, stilt-walking, pantomime, face painting, magic tricks... and the list goes on.

Now, you may think that you've mastered some - or all - of the above categories. But what could be more fun that watching (and possibly learning from) someone who has also mastered some of these things?

There are a few schools that are strictly that - classes for clowning held independently of any other event. The Clown Conservatory in San Franciso, CA and the Ultimate Clown School in New York City are examples of this type of school.

Most 'schools,' however, are connected to festivals or conventions where clowns gather not only to learn more about their art, but to compete in various competitions: make-up, skit performance, and paradability are a few of the usual competiton categories. Here they can discover the latest clowning products (and often purchase from vendors), perform for the general public, and enjoy playful fellowship.

If you're interested in learning more about becoming a clown, you'll find a listing of various Clown Schools, as well as information on many different Clown Events around the country elsewhere on our site!
