I remember watching Red Skelton's variety show on television when I was a child. I remember my parents laughing at him as he adlibbed or started laughing at his own jokes. His 'cloddish' characters were caricatures of simple men whom you might meet on the streets of America. The word clown does, after all, mean 'clod,' which described a person of lesser dignity or a servant.
Unless you see a picture of Skelton's Hobo character, Freddy the Freeloader, you may be surprised to hear him referred to as a clown. After all, don't clowns have painted faces, wear brightly colored clothes, wigs and big red noses?
Yes, they do.
But while Red Skelton wore no big red nose, he garnered the affectionate title of "America's Clown." Americans, and people all around the world, loved Red Skelton - who served others by surrendering his dignity in order to bring laughter and happiness into the lives of so many people.
That is the true mark of a clown - the desire to serve others by bringing happiness and laughter - no matter what you're wearing!
Now you can read - and write - tales of your favorite clown(s).
