According to what I've read, he was the first tramp/hobo character clown. At least maybe a few years coming onto the circus scene before Emmett Kelly made 'Weary Willie'.
Yet in that time he made up some of the funniest twists on circus routines. Such as the video of him in the boxing ring with Freddie Freeman or his blowups when he pitted the audience against each other to see who appreciated his clowning more.
Not to mention he was with Ringling Brothers TWICE in his career, to be able to leave the Greatest Show on Earth and have the chance to return means just how fantastic a performer he was and how much he was loved by all.
